Tintern tunnel was on the Wye Valley Railway between Chepstow and Monmouth. It was bored through a ridge of Carboniferous limestone on the narrow neck of land within a horseshoe bend of the river opposite Tintern. The contractors were Messrs Reed Bros. & Co. of London, and the tunnel is 182 yards long. The WVR opened to traffic on 1 November 1876, and finally closed (to goods) in January 1964.
