Mining has been going on in the Forest of Dean since roman times, or even earlier. Until 17th century iron ore mining was of primary importance. After the industrial revolution coal mining came to the fore.

Miners developed their own language for the things they worked with, the tools they used, the rocks and ground they dug and the names they gave their collieries.

This book aims to save the memory of those special terms, collected by keen members of the Society. It also honours the memory of the miners who risked their lives every day.
